MOUNT VERNON — A local man died late Tuesday afternoon after the lawn tractor he was driving on the side of Wings Mills Road was hit from behind by a vehicle, a Kennebec County Sheriff Department release states.

Kennebec County Deputy Mike Dutil responded along with members of the Mt. Vernon Volunteer Fire Department to a 5:16 p.m. report of an accident in the area of 335 Wings Mills Road.

First responders arrived to find Manley Damren, 76, of 339 Wings Mills Road, lying on the side of the road, Capt. Dan Davies said in the release. He was pronounced dead at the scene, he said.

A preliminary investigation found that Damren was southbound on the right side of the road riding his John Deere lawn tractor. Charles Morse, 60, of Mt. Vernon, was also southbound on the Wings Mills Road when he happened upon Damren. The right front of Morse’s 2002 Subaru Outback station wagon struck the rear of Damren’s lawn tractor, throwing Damren against the vehicle and off to the side of the road, according to the release.

Damren’s John Deere was thrown into the wood line.

Morse was not injured in the crash.
