HEBRON —  Selectmen at their Monday meeting approved a winter sand bid for $5.50 per yard from Maynard and Sons of Sumner, including loading and hauling to the town garage with its own trucks.

“That’s a really good price delivered,” said Selectman Jim Reid. “You can’t start your dump truck for that.”

Albert Hemond of Minot bid $2.75 per yard. Drake and Sons of Hebron bid $4.50 per yard undelivered and $9.50 per yard delivered.

Selectmen chose Maynard and Sons based on the price per yard and the quality of sand.

“It’s good sand,” said Reid.

While selectman agreed its sand was the same quality as Drake and Sons, hauling sand from Maynard’s own pit was less expensive, whereas Drake and Sons buys gravel from a third party.

“If it was likely going to be less expensive to go to Drake’s, then it would make up for the difference of the sand, probably,” said Selectman Dan Eichorn “and we’re trying to minimize the cost as much as possible, especially if the sand is essentially similar quality.”

Selectmen quickly rejected Hemond’s bid based on the quality of his sand. “It’s just like dust,” said Reid.

According to Reid, Hemond’s sand pit is too worn out. “It’s been running for years … for three or four different towns each year,” he said. “It’s just not the quality we want. It’s too fine.”

In other news, the board:

• Heard from local Boy Scout Zane Dustin that his project of erecting “Welcome to Hebron” signs in town has been put on hold until September 27, pending approval from the Boy Scout Committee. Dustin is working toward rank of Eagle Scout.

• Heard from Selectman Dan Eichorn that a representative from Oxford County Regional Recycling is planning to replace two bins, as well as remove the dump body and other items at the transfer station from within the setback of a neighboring property some time this week.
