WOODSTOCK — A motorcyclist from Oklahoma was seriously injured when he drifted into a guardrail on Route 232 on Friday morning, and was thrown about 15 feet over a brook and just beyond a concrete bridge abutment.
Jamie Sherman, 36, of Noble, Okla., suffered head, leg and arm injuries and was being treated at Maine Medical Center in Portland on Friday night. A nursing supervisor said there was no information available on his condition.
Oxford County Deputy Sheriff Chris Davis said Sherman was riding north with two other cyclists when the accident happened at about 11:15 a.m. on a curve just beyond the Billings Hill Road intersection.
The two cyclists riding with Sherman said he didn’t lean right when rounding the curve.
“Inexperience — not speed — was the only factor,” Davis said. “He was here for a family function and was out for a ride with family members, and he didn’t take the corner correctly.”
Sherman was riding a 2011 Harley-Davidson 1200 Sportster without a license and a helmet, Davis said. The bike drifted into a guardrail, throwing him about 15 feet and gouging his thigh on a sharp guardrail post, Davis and the two cyclists said.
He narrowly missed landing in a brook about 10 feet below the road and landed just beyond a concrete bridge abutment in a grassy opening. The motorcycle continued along the guardrail before stopping.
Davis didn’t have a damage estimate for it.
Sherman was taken by PACE ambulance to Stephens Memorial Hospital in Norway, where he was picked up by LifeFlight and flown to the Portland hospital.
The accident remains under investigation, Davis said.
Woodstock and Greenwood firefighters helped direct traffic around the scene for about 45 minutes.
