SELINSGROVE, Pa.— Christopher Emery of Auburn was one of 10 students from Susquehanna University who recently spent time helping to restore the site of a medieval castle in Villandraut, a village about 25 miles from Bordeaux in France. The trip is part of the university’s Global Opportunities program.

GO Villandraut gives students the opportunity to work on the restoration of the Chateau de Villandraut, a 14th-century castle. Activities include stone-cutting, work on government-approved archaeological digs and general maintenance of the chateau site. Students study social structure in the Middle Ages and issues relating to historic preservation in both France and the United States. Included are field trips to other historic monuments of the same era, a stone quarry and a vineyard. Work at the castle site is preceded and followed by time in Paris, where students visit several medieval landmarks.

Emery is studying business at Susquehanna, where he will be a senior in the fall. He is a 2009 graduate of St. Dominic High School and the son of Gerald and Heather Emery.
