GREENWOOD — On Oct. 14, the Jackson-Silver American Legion Post 68 will host a Veteran Recognition Day for Oxford County veterans and their families at the Gore Road post. Members will recognize the service of local veterans who served in any war including but not limited to Desert Storm, Iraq and Afghanistan. The event will also recognize 154 casualties of World War I, World War II, Korea and Vietnam.
During the last three years, the River Valley towns in Oxford County have held several veteran recognition events with support from the Maine Veteran Services organization. For that reason, the Post has decided to limit the Oct. 14 event to the other remaining Oxford County towns.
A computer database has the names of more than 8,000 veterans who entered the service from one of the following 20 Oxford County towns: Bethel, Buckfield, Brownfield, Denmark, Fryeburg, Greenwood, Hartford, Hiram, Lincoln Plantation, Lovell, Milton Plantation, Newry, Norway, Oxford, Paris, Stoneham, Stow, Sweden, Waterford, West Paris and Woodstock.
To participate in the Oct. 14 event, provide information on each veterans to one of the people listed below. Include any pertinent information regarding awards received, such as Purple Heart, BSM, Silver Star, etc. Contact either of the following to submit names of veterans to be recognized: Len Greaney, Oxford County Veteran Researcher, 74 Andover Road, Rumford, ME 04276, email Len.Greaney@Gmail.com, 364-7485; or Wayne Hakala, Commander, Post 68, email jacksonsilverpoat68@roadrunner.com, 527-2234.
Post members will coordinate local information with Peter Ogden, director of Maine Veteran Services, to prepare the service awards for each participant.
Post members ask that a family member of any one of the known casualties from World War I, World War II, Korea and Vietnam contact Greaney or Hakala to confirm participation.
