A Bryant Pond man critically injured in a motorcycle accident Sept. 3 died Saturday.

Raymond S. Melanson, 61, died at home, surrounded by family, according to his obituary. He and his wife, Carol, had two sons and four grandchildren.

On Sept. 3, Melanson was riding his 2010 Yamaha touring motorcycle when he sideswiped a utility pole and he and his motorcycle were thrown nearly 120 feet from the initial impact, Maine State Trooper Dan Hanson told the Sun Journal at the time. Hanson said the crash occurred at 4:48 p.m. near the Newry Town Office.

He was flown from Rumford Hospital by LifeFlight to Central Maine Medical Center and taken to surgery immediately. Hanson said Melanson was not wearing a helmet and sustained serious head trauma and leg injuries.

Melanson served in the United States Marine Corps Reserve and was a highly-regarded flooring contractor, the obituary said. He was a competitive skier and tournament bass fisherman.
