KINGFIELD — New England Celtic Arts partnering with the Kingfield POPS will present world-music band The Sultans of String on Sunday, Sept. 30, at the Herbert Hotel.
The 2010 Juno Award-nominated performers, who blend elements of flamenco, Arabic folk, Cuban rhythms and gypsy jazz, were recently seen on the Maine Public Broadcasting Network.
The Sultans of String of Canada will also perform Tuesday, Oct. 2, at the Unity College Center for the Performing Arts in Unity; and Wednesday, Oct. 3, at Skye Theatre Performing Arts Center in Carthage.
The Sultans of String return to Maine to launch the 11th season for Kingfield POPS. This tour will feature Sultans founder and six-string violinist Chris MacKhool and multi-instrumentalist Devin Laliberte, perhaps best known as a flamenco guitarist. A meet-and-greet will be held at the Herbert Hotel before the show. Space is limited so reservations are suggested.
Besides playing in concert, The Sultans will work in Franklin County schools and later perform with the Bangor Symphony Orchestra at the annual Kingfield POPS festival in June 2013.
Sultans of String has performed at venues including the Celtic Connections Festival in the United Kingdom, Birdland Jazz Club in New York City, Sculler’s Jazz Club in Boston, Toronto’s Four Seasons Centre and the Folk Alliance in Memphis.
Among its many awards, the Sultans received a JUNO Award nomination for Instrumental Album of the Year (2010) for its “Yalla Yalla!” CD; was a 2011 International Songwriting Competition finalist; and was a 2011 Independent Music Award finalist in two categories, instrumental album and world beat album.
“North America is a real meeting place of musical influences from around the world,” McKhool said in a prepared release. “At the same time, as a band we try to tell uniquely North American stories, putting forth our vision of the world as one family.”
