Genealogy: Finding Your Roots, on Tuesdays, Oct. 2, 9, 16, 23 and 30. Time choices for one-on-one sessions are 1 to 2 p.m., 2:15 to 3:15 p.m. or 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. Instructor is Carroll Holmes, who will work with participants using genealogical websites to find people on their family tree. Bring your curiosity, your knowledge and information (names, dates, places) you may have.
Maine Author Series will feature John Ford Sr., author of “Suddenly, the Cider Didn’t Taste So Good: The Adventures of A Game Warden in Maine,” from 1 to 2 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 9. Ford will share stories, some humorous, some serious, of his 20-plus years as a member of the Maine Warden Service.
AARP Safe Driving, 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 11. Cost is $14, payable to AARP; $12 for AARP members. Drivers 55 and older who complete this class are eligible for discounts on their auto insurance premiums for three years.
Keeping a Healthy Brain: Does Forgetting Mean Dementia?, from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 17. Instructor Darlene Field, Alzheimer Care Consultant, will discuss the differences between normal age-related memory loss, dementia and Alzheimer’s disease. Strategies for maintaining brain health will be presented along with practical tips for healthy living.
Energy Saving Tips for this Winter, 10 to 11:30 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 18. Instructor: Suzanne Bussiere, CMP. Learn energy saving tips, as well as how to survive extended outages: what happens, food safety, cautions.
Surviving the Winter Blues, 10 a.m. to noon Monday, Oct. 22. Instructor: Doug Bruenig, educator, Common Ties. Learn how to help yourself and others understand the causes and effects of the lack of sun/daylight and get some real “hands on” skills to take home and start using now.
Tai Chi for Aches & Pains, 10 to 11 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 23. This is an easy, joint-safe class that people can do either seated or standing. Tai chi uses gentle motions to create a continuous, flowing movement that promotes relaxation.
This month’s “What’s Happening to My Body As It Ages?” will focus on ears and eyes, from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 25. Instructor: Dr. Alan Verrill, CMMC, Hospitalist. Learn what happens to eyes and ears as they age, and how we might help ourselves.
Art that Leaves with You!, 9 a.m. to noon, Monday, Oct. 29. Instructor: Jim Dunn, local artist. Cost: $45 supplies, lesson. No experience necessary. The instructor guides attendees each step of the way. Participants will leave with a landscape in oils that they did themselves.
