WINTHROP — The Bailey Public Library and Winthrop Historical Society will present “Mainers in the Civil War,” featuring author Harry Gratwick, on Tuesday, Oct. 9.

A retired teacher, Gratwick is a lifelong summer resident of Vinalhaven Island in Penobscot Bay. As a young man, he explored the waters around Vinalhaven by outboard; as an adult , he cruises the Maine Coast from Casco Bay to Mount Desert.

Maine did not witness any Civil War battles; however, Maine contributed to the war in many important ways. Hailing from the mainland to the islands, soldiers bravely fought in most major battles. Men like Gen. Joshua Chamberlain, the hero of Little Round Top, proudly returned home to serve as governor. Maine native Hannibal Hamlin served as Abraham Lincoln’s first vice president. And Maine’s women sacrificed and struggled to maintain their communities and support the men who had left to fight.

Gratwick documents the stories of these and other Mainers who preserved “The Way Life Should Be” for Maine and the entire United States.

“Mainers in the Civil War” will be presented at 6:30pm in the reading room of the library on Bowdoin Street.
