PORTLAND (AP) — Independent U.S. Senate candidate Angus King’s campaign is accusing Republican Charlie Summers of ducking a forum hosted by the Women’s Policy Center to avoid flip-flopping on abortion. Summers responded that he’s always been in favor of abortion rights.
King’s spokeswoman, Crystal Canney, pointed Thursday to a Bangor Daily News survey that said Summers supports abortion only in cases of rape or incest. Summers said Thursday he’s always been “pro-choice” and that the survey answer was in error.
Summers canceled his appearance at Thursday evening’s forum to attend a Maine Lobstermen’s Association event in Rockland.
Summers also missed a debate hosted by the Maine Municipal Association. He said there will be plenty more before the Nov. 6 election. Also in the Senate race are Democrat Cynthia Dill and three other independents.
