Bates 2, Southern Maine 0

GORHAM – Julia Rafferty and rookie Maggie Coco scored goals in the second half to give Bates a 2-0 victory over the University of Southern Maine in non-conference women’s soccer action Tuesday.

Rafferty broke a scoreless deadlock in the 55th minute when her shot from the top of the 18-yard box bounced off the right post and into the left side netting for her first goal of the season.

Coco added the insurance goal in the 69th minute as she took a back pass from senior Sam Rose and slipped a 10-yard shot past Huskies (2-12-0) keeper Katie Cobb and inside the left post for her first collegiate goal.

The sides played a scoreless first half that saw the Bobcats (4-7-1) slowly take control of the match. After a fairly even first 15 minutes, the Bobcats’ offense came to life getting off 11 shots, including seven on goal that Cobb handled flawlessly.

Bates junior goalkeeper Anabel Schmelz did not record a save to earn her third shutout of the season. Cobb stopped nine shots in net for Southern Maine. Bates finished the match outshooting USM 18-0 and having a 6-2 advantage in corner kicks.

Southern Maine will host Eastern Connecticut State University for a Little East Conference match on Saturday at 3 p.m., while Bates travels to Vermont’s Middlebury College on Saturday for a NESCAC match at 12 p.m.
