1943 – 2012
GRAY — Gerald “Jerry” Eugene Steeves, 69, died Thursday, Oct. 18, at his home in Gray. He had COPD and emphysema and had been under the care of VNA in-home hospice care since May of this year.
He was born April 24, 1943, in Portland to Russell and Margaret Robinson Steeves and attended Windham Schools.He was graduated in 1962 and joined the U.S. Army in September 1962.The overseas locations where he served were Saran, France; Taiwan; Korea (twice); and Tehran, Iran.He retired from the Army in September 1982.He worked for the Maine Department of Corrections from 1982 until his retirement in October 2005, due to medical issues. He also served on the Gray Cable Committee for several years.
He married Janet Salisbury Morrison on Dec. 31, 1977. His first marriage ended in divorce.
He is survived by his wife of 34 years; three daughters, Rhonda Vickerson, Lonnie Steeves and her partner, Susan McAllaster, and Elizabeth Blanchard and her husband, Damon; two sons, Michael Steeves and his wife, Joanne, and Gerald II “JJ” and his wife, Theresa; eight grandchildren, Jennifer, Joshua, Jeremy, Abigail, James, Sophie, Anabelle and Larissa; sister, Bonnie Dwyer and her husband, Tom; a nephew; a niece; three grandnieces; two grandnephews; and several stepbrothers and stepsisters.
He was predeceased by both his parents.
