PERU — A group who petitioned to allow public participation at the end of every selectmen’s meeting told the board Monday night they would keep on fighting for their right to be heard.
Public comments were limited to every other meeting months ago after discussions got out of hand. The board meets weekly.
Selectman Ed Ferland said he didn’t have the emails that were sent to Town Clerk Vera Parent from the Maine Municipal Association regarding questions about the petition.
Resident Martha Witherell said they want the right to speak at every meeting. Dawna Kazregis and Witherell said there would be no need for a special town meeting to resolve the issue if their right to speak was reinstated. Kazregis said the group would keep fighting for the people’s right to speak.
Selectman Dickie Powell said the right way to solve the problem is to reach an agreement and go back to open sessions every week.
In other business Monday, Selectman Kathy Hussey said trusses will go up Tuesday for the new town office roof, if it’s not too windy. The roof has been in bad repair for years and leaking was a serious problem.
The board approved a permit for Phil Buskey on Irish Farm Road for a shed, and a steel quonset hut for Gary Chiassom on High Street.
The board was told that the Rockemeka Grange has been sold.
Hussey reported that the first test on the public spring on Greenwoods Road came back free of contaminants.
