LEWISTON — Authors Jeffrey V. Wells and Allison Childs Wells will share a presentation at the next monthly meeting of the Stanton Bird Club of Lewiston and Auburn at 6:30 p.m. Monday, Nov. 5, titled “Preacher Birds and Teacher Birds: Surprising Stories about Maine’s Favorite Birds.” New, as of this meeting, are two things: a 6:30 p.m. meeting time and location at the University of Southern Maine’s Lewiston-Auburn College, 51 Westminster St. The meeting is free and open to all.
Both lifelong birders whose families go back hundreds of years in Maine, the speakers began birding together when they met in college. They will share stories of their many birding adventures, revealing some fascinating mysteries, and will talk about their new book, “Maine’s Favorite Birds.” Their extensive experience answering questions, leading bird walks and teaching others has afforded them much material for writing clearly about bird identification tips, easy-to-remember song descriptions, birding “hot spots” and ways to use bird observations for science and conservation.
Jeffrey V. and Allison Childs Wells graduated from University of Maine at Farmington. After completing graduate programs at Cornell University in Ithaca, N.Y., Allison worked as communications director for Cornell’s Lab of Ornithology, and Jeffrey worked as director of Bird Conservation for National Audubon. They have published hundreds of articles about birds and have collaborated on several projects. Allison is now senior director of public affairs for the Natural Resources Council of Maine and Jeffrey is senior scientist for the International Boreal Conservation Campaign and a visiting fellow at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology.
