Incumbent Democrat Margaret Craven held on to Senate District 16 seat, besting challenger Robert Reed 10,116 to 4,899.
Former Lewiston Councilor Reed 51, campaigned on a promise of financial expertise in budgets, spending and tax issues.
He favored welfare reform and cost-effective development of alternative energy sources, and said Maine needs to ensure “our students have the opportunities and training to compete in tomorrow’s marketplace,” partnering with business to create training opportunities that best suit businesses that may wish to relocate to Maine.
Craven, 68, who has served 10 years in the Legislature, campaigned on a promise to support and nurture businesses that already exist in Maine, and to “invest more in education, especially the trades,” including more investment in research and development. She also pledged to work to reduce the costs of energy and health care.
Craven was a Clean Election candidate; Reed did not use Clean Election funds.
