Incumbent Democrat John Patrick won a three-way race to hold onto his seat for Senate District 14.
Patrick received 8,929 votes to finish ahead of his rivals. Republican Harvey Calden of Jay had 5,040 votes and independent Leonard Greaney of Rumford received 2,080.
Greaney campaigned on a promise to address the need for lower energy costs and tax reform, combined with the need for a well-trained, flexible workforce to attract business. A retired engineer and former Rumford town manager, Greaney also campaigned on the need for welfare reform and reducing the cost of social services.
Patrick, who has served 10 years in the Legislature — eight years in the House and two years in the Senate — campaigned on a promise to “change the way we do things in Augusta and stop the bashing of Maine workers, Maine educators and the Maine brand.” He encouraged strengthening public education “to develop a well-trained workforce that is ready to fill the needs of all our Maine businesses.”
Calden did not respond to questions from the Sun Journal.
All three candidates were Clean Election candidates.
