Republican incumbent Thomas Saviello, 62, of Wilton won re-election to Senate District 18 on Tuesday with an 11,698 to 7,511 vote cushion over small business owner Joanne Dunlap, 69, of Rangeley.
Dunlap, a retired teacher, campaigned on the pledge that she would work to encourage “Made in Maine,” with appropriate tax breaks. “I believe very small businesses are Maine’s best investment to provide jobs without harming our environment.” Dunlap also supported an examination of the flow of people enrolled in welfare services, and supported development of “alternative energy sources of all types.”
Saviello, who has served 10 years in the Legislature, campaigned on the strength of his political experience and his reputation “to get things done working in a bipartisan way.” He is committed to continue implementing changes “to make the state more business-friendly by addressing the income tax structure, regulatory reform, unemployment fraud enforcement and better defining an independent contractor.” He is also committed to welfare reform, and supports the expansion of natural gas in rural communities.
Both were Clean Election candidates.
