LOWELL, Mass. — Freshman Kyle Williams redirected Mike Cornell shot into the net at 11:10 of the third period to give the University of Maine men’s ice hockey team a 4-3 win over UMass-Lowell on Saturday.. Rookie Devin Shore also picked up his first career goal in the game for the Black Bears. 

 UMass Lowell took a 1-0 lead with a power-play goal at 10:09 of the first period on a goal by Derek Arnold, that deflected off a skate. Joseph Pendenza and Chad Ruhwedel each assisted on the play for the River Hawks. 

Maine tied the game at 12:53 with a short-handed goal by Connor Leen. Leen skated down the left slot and fired a shot past UML goalie Doug Carr. For Leen, it was his team-leading third goal of the season. Mike Cornell assisted on the goal.

Kents Hill 37, Hebron 30

HEBRON — Nelkas Kwemo and Tim Swaby each scored touchdowns in the fourth quarter as Kents Hill (1-7) shelve Hebron Academy (0-8) with a 37-30 victory in a football game Saturday.

Hebron was leading 23-21 after three quarters when Kwemo scored on a 13-yard run and Swaby followed with 3-yard run. Hebron’s Daidyn Stewart scored on a 9-yard run, but it wasn’t enough.

Hebron’s Obie Christmas put his team on the board in the first quarter when he caught a 29-yard pass from Shaquille Cezont-Holmes. Pat Shelley made good on the extra point. Christmas also scored scored his second touchdown on fumble recovery in the end zone.

Cezont-Holmes scored on a 9-yard pass from Brett Harkins.

Colby 17, Bowdoin 0

WATERVILLE — The Colby College football team made the 124th meeting between the Mules and Bowdoin College a day to remember with an aggressive defense and two touchdowns in the fourth quarter to earn a 17-0 win at Seaverns Field at Harold Alfond Stadium on Saturday.

The Mules, for the second straight year, won three of the final four games to finish the season at 3-5. Bowdoin ended the year with a 1-7 record. The Polar Bears had won six straight games against Colby in what is the third-longest Division III series rivalry.

Women’s XC 4th at New Englands

WESTFIELD, Mass. — The No. 25 nationally ranked Bates women’s cross country team may have punched its ticket for its first team appearance at the NCAA Division III Championships since 1997, thanks to the Bobcats’ fourth-place finish out of 51 teams at Saturday’s NCAA New England Regionals at Westfield State.

Bates scored 145 points, finishing behind only No. 1 MIT (58), No. 3 Williams (75) and No. 5 Middlebury (89), and surprisingly well ahead of fifth-place and 17th-ranked Amherst (190) and sixth-place and 20th-ranked Tufts (210).

Bates’ second through sixth runners were all better than their counterparts on all but the top three teams, underscoring Bates’ powerhouse performance.
