NAPLES — A Massachusetts teenager died and another was seriously injured late Friday when a car slammed into a tree on Harrison Road.

Police said the driver, 17-year-old Joshua Bonnell was killed after losing control on a curve at about 11:05 p.m. and striking a tree at a high rate of speed. He was not wearing a seat belt, according to a Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office news release.

The passenger, 15-year-old Austin Bonnell, was partially ejected from the vehicle. Rescue crews used extrication equipment to free him, police said. He was taken to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston by LifeFlight helicopter.

Austin Bonnell had been wearing a seat belt, police said, and his injuries were not expected to be life-threatening. He sustained broken legs and a concussion in the crash.

The crash remained under investigation Saturday by the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office and members of the Cumberland County Crash Reconstruction Team. Police said speed was considered a factor; alcohol was not.
