USM program on street dust
PORTLAND — The University of Southern Maine and Cornerstones of Science announce the final installment of the Fall 2012 Science Cafes in the Atrium series held at Portland Public Library, Monument Square, from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 29. Professor of chemistry Lucille Benedict will discuss “Street Dust’s Dirty Little Secrets,” explaining what pollutants her research has uncovered in the street dust we breath, how these pollutants get there and what impact it has on our local environment.
The Science Cafe format is an informal approach to discussing and understanding scientific research and its relevance to people in their everyday lives. The event will offer light refreshments in an informal, casual atmosphere. Students, young professionals and anyone interested in getting the inside look at what scientists are doing – and why – are invited to attend. The event is free and open to the public.
Senior Citizens meet Dec. 12
BETHEL — The Bethel Senior Citizens Club will meet at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 12, at the Bethel Inn. The cost of the roast pork meal is $12 for members and $15 for nonmembers. Reservations must be made before Dec. 1.
Crescent Park Chorus under the direction of Linda Stowell will perform.
Roast turkey dinner is Dec. 1
PARIS — A roast turkey dinner with all the fixings and homemade pies will be served at 5 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 1, at Deering Memorial Methodist Church, Main and Church streets.
The cost is $8 for adults and $4 for children under 12. There is ample parking behind the library and Town Office.
Fire Auxiliary craft fair Dec. 1
WEST PARIS — The West Paris Fire Auxiliary will hold a craft fair from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 1, at the Agnes Gray School.
There will be a door prize, 50/50 raffle and beverages and food.

Horseman’s fair, showcase
PARIS — Western Maine Harness Horseman’s Association will hold its holiday showcase and craft fair from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 2, at the Paris Fire Station, 137 Western Ave.
The first 50 people will receive a free ornament. There will be raffles, door prizes and lunch.

Homecoming Sunday at SCC
NORWAY — Second Congregational Church, UCC invites anyone who hasn’t been to church for awhile or who is looking for a church family to Homecoming Sunday on Dec. 2. The church is at the corner of Paris and Main streets, across from the Rowe School.
Following worship there will be a Christmas Family Workshop to make ornaments and Christmas cards. Each Sunday in December at 9:45 a.m. there will be a Carol Sing before worship at 10.
On Dec. 8 and 9 the church will host the community Christmastide Concert under the direction of Shirli Allen-Heald at 3 p.m.
Women’s Fellowship will hold a bake sale on Sunday, Dec. 16, and will also offer for sale knives, dishcloths and church cookbooks which make great stocking stuffers.
The Christian Ed department will have their Sunday School pageant on Dec. 23 and Family Christmas Eve service is at 6 p.m., with candlelight service at 11 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 24.
A free community supper will be held from 5 to 6 p.m. Friday, Dec. 21.

Socrates Cafe topic: Spirituality
WATERFORD — A Socrates Cafe gathering will be held at the Waterford Library on Monday, Dec. 3, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Meetings are held on the first Monday of each month.
The group offers a forum to discuss current topics and ideas in a warm, friendly atmosphere, where divergent views will be welcome. Coffee and light refreshments will be served.
The topic for the December meeting will be “What Is Spirituality?” The moderator is Bob Dow.

OTISFIELD — The food pantry at Spurrs Corner Church, Route 121, will be open Tuesday, Dec. 4.

WEST PARIS — The food pantry will be open from 1 to 3 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 4, at West Paris Baptist Church, 15 Church St. The pantry is open the first and third Tuesday of each month.
Veterans’ advocate visits Dec. 7, 19
PARIS — The Veterans’ Advocate will not be at the Maine Veterans’ Home on Wednesday, Dec. 5. Instead, his visits will be from 9 a.m. to noon Friday, Dec. 7, and Wednesday, Dec. 19.
