PERU — A Buckfield man was injured Wednesday morning when police say he drove into the back of a truck on Route 108.
Alan Litchfield, 50, was taken by Med-Care Ambulance to Rumford Hospital after the 5:35 a.m. accident, Oxford County Sheriff’s Office Cpl. Chancey Libby said.
Litchfield was admitted to Rumford Hospital and listed in fair condition seven hours after the accident, spokeswoman Jane Bubar said.
Libby said Litchfield was driving west on Route 108 toward Rumford in a 2004 Chevy four-door car when it struck the back of a Cianbro Corp. 2008 S250 pickup truck operated by Terry Melloy, 50, of Augusta.
According to witnesses, Libby said Melloy was stopped to turn left into the Dixfield Discount Fuel lot and had the truck’s left directional light flashing.
Libby said he spoke with Litchfield, who told him “he doesn’t remember what happened.”
“The whole front end of that car was gone,” Libby said of Litchfield’s Chevrolet.
He said a heavy steel bumper protected the Cianbro truck from taking much damage, but estimated it at $1,000. The Cianbro truck was still drivable; the car was towed by Adley’s of Rumford.
Peru firefighters limited Route 108 traffic to one lane while debris was cleared from the road.
“The Peru Fire Department was awesome,” Libby said.
No charges were filed.
