PARIS — The highway foreman is allowed to take a town truck to his home in Bridgton during the winter so he can respond more quickly to situations, selectmen said Monday.
Highway Foreman Daniel Nowell was told he could bring the truck to his home when he was first hired in January 2011. He can take the truck home between Oct. 15 and April 15, but Nowell said he only uses the truck until February.
Vice Chairman Robert Kirchherr said the issue comes up from time to time, mainly because the condition was never put in writing. Like most town employees, Kirchherr said, Nowell doesn’t have a contract.
Kirchherr said the perk is a benefit to the town because it allows Nowell to respond more quickly. Nowell said he recently drove up during Hurricane Sandy to clear branches from roads.
The board agreed to produce a letter outlining Nowell’s use of the truck.
Selectman Gerald Kilgore said that in the future, such benefits should be in writing.
