AUBURN — On Sunday, Dec. 9, the Lewiston Elks Lodge 371 will hold its annual Hoop Shoot Free Throw Contest at the Hasty Community Center. Registration for the event will start at 8 a.m., with the competition starting at 9.
Children ages 8-13 are eligible to participate, and will compete separately in age groups (8-9, 10-11 and 12-13). Each age group will have one boy and one girl advance to the next level of competition. There is no charge to enter the contest, which involves each competitor shooting 25 free throws, with the highest male and female scorer in each age group declared the winner.
At this event, Crusher, the mascot of the Maine Red Claws, is expected to be in attendance. A drawing will be held for one boy and one girl to be the official ball boy/girl at an upcoming Maine Red Claws basketball game. Bobble heads will also be distributed to each competitor, while supplies last.
Winners will advance to the District contest, to be held in Augusta in January. Winners of that event will advance to the State and possibly the Regional and National contests, with expenses at the higher levels paid for by the Maine Elks Association.
For more information or to preregister, contact Elks Hoop Shoot Chairman Ed McClure at 998-3167 or email at mcclure5379@roadrunner.com. Preregistration is not required, as registration will also take place the day of the event. Additional information on the Elks Hoop Shoot program can be found online at www.elks.org/hoopshoot.
