A steel cable stretched across Pleasant Street near Mitchell Street in Lewiston took off the top of a Lewiston woman’s compact car yesterday afternoon when she slammed into it. The driver, Lorraine L. Beliveau, 20, of the Webster Road, escaped injury by only inches. A cable was tied to two Lewiston Crushed Stone Co. trucks, police said, as one of the vehicles was attempting to pull the second truck off the side of the road. At the time of the unusual accident, the truck that was pulling was almost directly across Pleasant Street, and the cable was stretched diagonally across the road. Miss Beliveau told police that she did not notice the cable as she approached the spot. All of a sudden her 1958 Morris convertible coupe struck the cable. The canvas top of the convertible and the braces were ripped off by the cable. It was noted on an accident report that no one was directing traffic at the time of the mishap.

The Poland School Committee approved by a 3-2 vote changeover from Commodore 64 to Apple compatible computers. Some of the 25 Commodore computers now in use are being repaired with the $1,000 budgeted for that purpose. With $4,000 budgeted for computers, several Apples should be acquired soon, said Superintendent Wyllys Terry. He said that an estimated 80 percent of schools with computer courses now use Apples, while only 15 percent use Commodores.
