WILTON — A dog is credited with waking the tenant of a late-model mobile home so she could escape a fire that destroyed the home and a vehicle in the early hours of Friday morning.
Kelly Hall escaped but firefighters had not found her dog as of late Friday morning, said Wilton fire Chief Sonny Dunham. They are not sure if the dog got out or if it was still under the rubble.
Hall was distraught and was taken by NorthStar ambulance to Franklin Memorial Hospital to be checked out. She was released at about 9 a.m., he said.
A Wilton firefighter, Deputy Chief Tom Doak, was also transported to FMH when he started feeling ill during the fire. He is now in good condition and was released later Friday morning, Dunham said.
The home, owned by Erald Farmer of Temple, was fully in flames when Dunham, who lives nearby, arrived on the scene. Neighbors reported they didn’t hear any smoke alarms.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation by the State Fire Marshal’s Office. The scene was pretty intense, and at that time of early morning, Dunham sought help to determine the cause, he said.
A vehicle owned by a friend of Hall’s was parked in the driveway and was also destroyed by the fire.
Firefighters were called to 929 Main St., known as Arkay Trailer Park, Lot 35, at about 2:55 a.m. They cleared the scene at about 7 a.m.
Dunham said the Red Cross has been called and Hall plans to stay with a friend.
About 55 firefighters fought the fire. Mutual aid arrived from Farmington, East Dixfield, Jay and Livermore Falls.
