AUGUSTA (AP) — Maine Gov. Paul LePage is laying a wreath at the State House as part of a celebration of veterans during the annual “Wreaths Across America” event.
LePage is joining members of the Maine Funeral Directors Association and their families during the Monday ceremony in Augusta. His wife, meanwhile, is traveling to Arlington National Cemetery with a caravan of eight wreath-filled tractor-trailer trucks.
This year, about 100,000 Maine-made balsam wreaths are headed to Arlington, while another 300,000 of them are destined for veterans’ cemeteries and other locations elsewhere.
The tradition started in 1992 when Morrill Worcester displayed 5,000 wreaths at Arlington. The nonprofit Wreaths Across America now oversees distribution to more than 800 locations.
