- Three members of Greene’s Board of Selectmen, Tony Reny, Donald Bedford and Ronald Grant, presented to Elizabeth R. Smith, Greene’s oldest citizen, the Boston Post Cane on Dec. 16. Smith, 95, was born in Greene on Oct. 2, 1917, to Edward and Jennie Odiorne Rackley. She graduated from Auburn School of Commerce and taught school in Calais and Rockland before changing her career to become a case worker for the State of Maine Department of Human Services. She married Matthew “Jack” Smith; they lived for many years on her family’s farm where Elizabeth was born, Rackley Farm on the Merrill Hill Road. Later they built a home on property they owned on Merrill Hill Road, before moving to the Meadows Independent Living Center in Greene. Jack passed away in 2005. Elizabeth enjoyed the presentation on Sunday. Also in attendance were Smith’s niece Barbara C Bubier, close friends Donald and Donna Rose and Kevin and Jenny Rose and their two daughters, along Sally Ann Hebert and Michael Stephanak, who photographed the event. Smith keeps her residency in Greene while she resides at Marshwood Center in Lewiston.
