PORTLAND (AP) — A feasibility study suggests that a pair of one-way streets in Portland could be safely converted to two-way streets.
Residents have suggested that making State and High Streets two-way would force drivers to slow down, making it safer for pedestrians.
The Portland Press Herald said the study by engineer Tom Errico of T Y Lin International was presented to a city council committee on Wednesday night.
Errico said he found no “fatal flaw” with the plan and no evidence that converting the streets to two-way traffic would create gridlock. But there was concern there might not be enough room for a large truck or bus to safely turn from Congress Street on to a reconfigured High Street.
The committee wants a more detailed engineering analysis and other information before considering a recommendation to the full council.
