- The Maine Community Foundation has announced the Maine Policy Scholars 2012-2013 class. One student from each campus of the University of Maine system has been selected to pursue a year-long program of applied research in the area of Maine public policy. The 2013 Maine Policy Scholars are, back, from left, Adam Pinette, University of Maine at Presque Isle; Chase Card-Burns, University of Maine at Fort Kent; Christy Daggett, University of Southern Maine; Thomas Conley, University of Maine; front, Dovey Balsam, University of Maine at Farmington; Al French, University of Maine at Augusta; and Luis Herrera, University of Maine at Machias. During the course of the academic year, scholars work with a faculty adviser to tackle a policy issue currently facing Maine. After conducting extensive research, the student produces a final report in the form of a memo to the Governor or appropriate policymaker, which outlines the issue and the data available and offers policy solutions. In the late spring, the scholars present their reports in the form of a briefing to a panel of policymakers.
