LEWISTON — A judge has ordered Michael Callahan, 44, of Minot held on $10,000 cash bail for charges brought after a six-and-a-half-hour standoff at his home Friday night.
Police said Callahan, a Boy Scout leader, fired dozens of gunshots during the standoff, which began when a family member fled the home and called police. Callahan surrendered around 5 a.m. Saturday after a member of the Maine State Police Tactical Team returned fire. Among the guns seized was an assault rifle.
On Monday, Callahan stood during his initial appearance in Lewiston District Court with his head bowed.
His attorney, James Howaniec, described the incident as a “very aberrant episode,” uncharacteristic of a man with no prior criminal history.
Howaniec said the standoff might have ended sooner, but for police trying to reach Callahan through the wrong telephone.
“It also appears that he slept through part of the episode,” the lawyer said.
However, Judge Paul Cote was unmoved.
“The danger is obvious,” Cote said. He called the $10,000 bail “minimally appropriate.”
Callahan’s trial is scheduled for March 28 at Androscoggin County Superior Court in Auburn.
