LEEDS — A teacher at Leeds Central School has won a $5,000 districtwide teaching prize.
Sheila Lyman, a fifth- and sixth-grade teacher, was presented the Patience W. Norman Prize for Teacher Excellence during a surprise assembly last week. More than 200 students, teachers and townspeople, including Lyman’s family, attended the assembly.
The Norman Prize was established by the Maine Community Foundation to recognize SAD 52 teachers who emulate the educational philosophy of Norman, a history teacher who believed her students were capable of academic excellence and challenged them to surpass expectations.
Candidates for the annual prize must have worked in the Greene, Leeds and Turner school district for at least five years and must demonstrate one or more of the following qualities: unusual impact and effectiveness in the classroom, commitment to students, creativity and innovation in teaching and leadership that provides a positive model for students.
Lyman has been teaching for 30 years.
