WOODSTOCK — A local man accused of burglarizing a Dixmont home late last year after being released from prison is back in jail, Maine State Police Trooper Dan Hanson said Tuesday.
Joseph Cox, 27, who is living in Weld, was arrested Dec. 16 by state police on charges of burglary, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, receiving stolen property, two counts of violation of conditions of release, and a bail violation.
He is currently being held in Somerset County Jail in Madison while awaiting grand jury indictment arrest warrants from Penobscot and Franklin counties, Hanson said.
He said Cox was released from prison in September 2011 after serving a six-month sentence for convictions on drug crimes and burglaries. On release, Cox entered a drug treatment program in the Bangor area.
Hanson said that while Cox was up there for treatment, “he committed these burglaries, and I had received word that he was in possession of stolen property and began working a case against him in November.”
Hanson said he recovered items taken in the burglaries from Cox’s residence in Weld and his family home on Perkins Valley Road in Woodstock.
In addition, while working with two troopers from the Orono barracks, officials recovered several stolen firearms from Cox’s residences, Hanson said.
At the time, Cox was a felon with five burglary and drug convictions dating back to 2001, and wasn’t allowed to have guns.
“I’ve been dealing with him since he was a juvenile,” Hanson said.
“He did hold an electrician job for a while, but he doesn’t work. All the time that I’ve dealt with him, he’s been out committing crimes.”
In November 2011, while wanted on a Bangor warrant charging failure to pay fines, Cox touched off a four-hour manhunt that involved about 50 county and state police officers after he assaulted a family member and threatened other people while armed with a pellet rifle, police said.
