RUMFORD — The local Snowshoe Club is preparing for a competition at noon Sunday, Feb. 17, at Mountain Valley Middle School.
Club President Stephen Gallant said the contest is open to all ages.
“We have everything from a 4-5 (years old) category to a 95 or older category, if there’s even anybody in it,” he said. “Within each category, there are meter runs of 50, 100, 400 and 800.”
Medals will be presented to the winners at the club on 227 Waldo St. and trophies to the best male and female athlete of the competition.
Gallant said nonmembers are welcome to compete with club members.
Registration will be from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Feb. 17 at the club. There is a $3 entrance fee.
“There’s no additional fee if you want to compete in a different category,” Gallant said. “That’s something I’ve heard people saying, and that’s not the case. There’s a flat rate of $3 and that’s it.”
Gallant said the competition is sponsored by the American Snowshoe Union and has been held for decades.
“I know that the snowshoe club in Rumford has been around for at least 85 years, and I know other clubs have been doing races like this before that,” Gallant said.
The club hosted a spaghetti and meatball supper, and dance Friday night. The Noel and Don Band performed and a Chinese auction was held to benefit the club athletes, he said.
