CARRABASSETT VALLEY — Frozen pipes and a broken sprinkler head temporarily forced guests out of the Grand Summit Hotel at Sugarloaf on Sunday night, Carrabassett Valley fire Chief Courtney Knapp said Monday.

Police sent guests and others next door to the base lodge, he said.

Sugarloaf is hosting the Special Olympics Winter Games from Sunday to Tuesday this week.

About 10 firefighters and two police officers initially responded to a report of the sprinklers being activated and smoke in the building at 7:50 p.m. Firefighters from Kingfield and Eustis were asked to stand by at the two departments’ fire stations.

There was no smoke in the building, but there was a broken sprinkler head that sent water down the stairs from the fourth floor, Knapp said.

Two rooms that were unoccupied had some minor water damage, he said. The area was cleaned up and dried, and guests and others were able to return to the hotel in about 45 minutes, he said.

Firefighters were on the scene for 90 minutes, Knapp said.
