LEWISTON — Deb Olin Unferth, award-winning American fiction writer and memoirist, will give a reading at Bates College as part of its Language Arts Live series. Unferth’s appearance will be at 7:30 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 11 in the Edmund Muskie Archives, 70 Campus Ave.
The event is open to the public at no cost.
Unferth is the author of the memoir “Revolution: The Year I Fell in Love and Went to Join the War” (Henry Holt, 2011), finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award; the novel “Vacation” (McSweeney’s Books, 2010), winner of the Cabell First Novel Award and a New York Times Critics’ Choice; and the story collection “Minor Robberies” (McSweeney’s Books, 2007).
Her work has been published in The New York Times, Harper’s, McSweeney’s, The Boston Review and elsewhere.
As The New York Times reviewer Madison Smartt Bell wrote of Unferth, “The source of her stories’ allure is not obvious, yet they are alluring — you feel them as deeply and definitely as glass splinters, but they don’t let you see how they do it.”
Unferth has received two Pushcart Prizes and a Creative Capital Grant for Innovative Literature. She is an associate professor of English at Wesleyan University.
