LEWISTON — Androscoggin Bank awarded two grants to local agencies from the bank’s MainStreet Foundation in December. The grants, totaling $15,000, were among four awarded to benefit youth in Maine.
Grants are typically announced four times a year. In 2012, $53,000 was awarded. The most recent round of grants went to the Good Shepherd Food-Bank in Auburn and Trinity Jubilee Center in Lewiston, as well as The Opportunity Alliance in Portland and Mission Possible Teen Center in Westbrook.
The $5,000 grant to Good Shepherd Food-Bank will support the continued work of the Backpack Program, a school-based food distribution program for school-age children identified as food insecure. Children are given packs of food at the end of each week to get them through the weekend, and school vacations, when free and reduced cost school breakfast and lunch are not available.
The $5,000 grant to Trinity Jubilee Center will support the center’s Juvenile Justice Project that provides positive alternatives and family-centered support for youth entering the criminal justice system for the first time — helping them understand the criminal justice process and comply with any requirements in an effort to divert youth away from detention facilities and into extracurricular activities.
