As local chiefs of police, we would like to share our thoughts on the recent Maine business leaders’ report that shows how high-quality early education helps our economy (Jan. 30). These programs also help keep our communities safe, and reduce later crime.

In addition to the positive education and career outcomes discussed by the business leaders, several long-term studies show that children who participate in high-quality early learning programs are significantly less likely to be involved in crime later in their teen or adult lives.

In fact, a study of Chicago’s Child-Parent Centers showed that children who did not participate in the program were 70 percent more likely to have been arrested for a violent crime by age 18 than those who did attend these high-quality early learning centers.

We agree with Maine’s business leaders who believe that high-quality early care and education programs, like prekindergarten, Head Start and quality child care, are good for our children and our economy. They are also a great crime prevention tool.

For all these reasons, we hope policymakers in Augusta and Washington will make funding for high-quality early education programs a priority.
