First event is Feb. 21 in Brunswick
AUGUSTA — The Maine Appalachian Trail Club has announced the formation of The Friends of the A.T in Maine, a committee whose goal is to promote and support MATC’s mission of maintaining and rebuilding 267 miles of the Appalachian Trail in Maine.
The Friends of the A.T. in Maine will plan and host public events that shine the spotlight on both the trail and the volunteer trail work performed by members of MATC.
The Friends committee comprises Lester Kenway of Bangor, committee chair; Tony Barrett, Harpswell; Ann Clark, Windham; Larry Clark, Windham; Rebecca Clark, Windham; Ron Dobra, Greenville; Douglas Dolan, Hollis Center; Laura Flight, Readfield; Tim Fortune, Camden; Lloyd Griscom, Phillips; Leslie Hahn, Portland; Donald K. Miskill Jr., Orrs Island; Ray Ronan, Gorham; Elsa Sanborn,Bangor; Dan Simonds, Rangeley, and Milt Wright, Readfield.
“The Appalachian Trail and the Maine Appalachian Trail Club are some of the best kept secrets in Maine,” said Lester Kenway, president of MATC. “With the formation of the Friends of the A.T. in Maine, we intend to bring good news about the club and the A.T. to the people of Maine.”
The first Friends of the A.T. in Maine event is scheduled for Thursday, Feb. 21, at The Frontier Cafe in Brunswick. Maine outdoors writer, A.T. thru-hiker and MATC trail maintainer Carey Kish will present “An Adventurous and Inspiring Evening Along the Appalachian Trail in Maine.” Attendees are invited to meet Kish in the cafe at 6:30 p.m. before his presentation at 7.
This event is free and open to the public. Seating in The Cinema Stage is limited to 85. While attendees are strongly urged to sign-up in advance by email at friends@matc.org or on the MATC’s Facebook page, www.facebook.com/MaineATC, seats are available on a first-come, first-served, general admission basis.
