1928 – 2013

AUBURN — Lester E. Hill, Jr., 84, formerly of Auburn, Monmouth and Englewood, Fla., died Thursday, Feb. 14, at Clover Manor with his loving family at his side after a long illness.

He was born in Monmouth on Dec. 6, 1928, son of the late Lester E. and Orrah (Libby) Hill Sr. He attended Monmouth Academy and graduated from Lewiston High School, Class of 1946. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy from 1946 to 1948.

Lester married the love of his life, Phyllis A. Foster, on June 18, 1949, and together they raised their three children. He was a foreman for O’Brien Die Co. and Auburn Die Co.

He attended the United Church of Monmouth, Sixth Street Congregational Church of Auburn and the United Methodist Church in Englewood, Fla. He loved singing in the choirs in all three churches.

Lester loved music and dancing. He sang for the Harmony Boys of Hallowell and square danced with the Winthrop Squire Town Squares. He also loved the outdoors, especially hunting, gardening and golf. His greatest joy was his family. His grandchildren will miss his “Hoss Bites,” “Rizzers,” wrestling matches and teasing.

He leaves his wife of 63 years, Phyllis Hill of Auburn; a son, Rodney L. Hill and his wife, Anita, of Minot; two daughters, Patricia St. Hilaire and her husband, David, of Auburn, and Susan Bixby and her husband, Richard, of Sanbornville, N.H.; two sisters, Ruth Prescott and husband, Philip, of Monmouth and Madeline Moates of Rockwood, Tenn.; eight grandchildren, Rodney Hill Jr., Read Bixby, Benjamin St. Hilaire, Kate Hill, Jacob St. Hilaire, Eric Bixby, Allyson Hill-Roberts and Naomi St. Hilaire; 10 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by two brothers, Frank and Robert Hill; and four sisters, Thelma Ridlon, Marilyn Taylor, Charlotte Libby and Theo Parker.
