People of Mechanic Falls are somewhat troubled over the smallpox situation. As stated in this morning’s Sun, a young girl of this place who was operated upon nine weeks ago at the C.M.G. hospital had been quarantined with small pox. Several people visited her at the hospital Sunday. It is said that those who were there that day and Monday will be quarantined, so that in case they should contract the disease, they will not spread it about town. The child’s mother has gone to the hospital and is quarantined in the room with her daughter.

The Auburn firefighters union president today accused the Fire Department of violating the union contract by including, as part of the reorganization plan, the selective recall of off-duty firefighters to battle city fires. According to the contract, if a multiple-alarm fire occurs, all three active platoons of firefighters are asked to report for duty. But under the new plan that goes into effect Monday, the number of off-duty firefighters recalled will depend on the severity of the blaze. “The city is unilaterally changing our contract without even talking to us, and that’s against the law,” said Charles Berube, president of the Auburn Firefighters Association.
