ANDOVER — Carol Emery, owner of the Sunrise Center for Healing Arts and Education, will host a free drum-and-dance potluck for women and girls of all ages on Saturday, March 2.

Emery, a trained energy medicine practitioner and member of the River Valley Healthy Communities Coalition, said the purpose of drumming and dancing is “for relaxation, and a way to have fun.”

“I’ve studied the expressive arts and drama therapy, and this is just a piece of that,” Emery said. “I don’t know how to drum, but I’m bringing along a drum, anyways. I guess we’ll see what happens.”

She laughed and added, “This is what happens with cabin fever — ideas like this. It’s a therapeutic, ecstatic type of dance. Who knows? Maybe all hell will break loose.”

In a news release, Emery said extra drums will be available upon request and that “it doesn’t matter what you wear, just as long as you are there.”

The drum-and-dance potluck will take place from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. at Andover Elementary School. There is no charge to attend.

In addition to the potluck, Emery said the Sunrise Center for Healing Arts and Education will host workshops by local practitioners, each offering a specific service to those who attend. Among the workshops being offered are Reiki, how to check and clear your chakras, yoga and massage therapy.

Emery, who will host and direct the events from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. March 2 and 3, will run her own Reiki workshop on Saturday, March 2. She described Reiki as a form of energy medicine that helps individuals rid themselves of stress.

“It’s amazing what a group of women can do by opening their hearts and trying to help each other,” Emery said. “We can all try and bring more peace to this world.”
