Spring semester, with 23 courses, begins March 25.
LEWISTON — The Senior College at USM’s Lewiston/Auburn College on Westminster Street is one of 17 senior colleges in the state.
For many years, Lewiston-Auburn Senior College has wanted a logo. Now in its 14th year, the board of directors formed an Ad Hoc Committee in October 2012 to fulfill this task. Serving on the committee were board members Rachel Morin, chair; Patricia Vampatella, co-chair; Anita Poulin, graphic artist; Joanne Sabourin, Cynthia Peters, Elinor Goldblatt and Edith Jordan.
The group came up with a logo making it uniquely Lewiston-Auburn: the Androscoggin River, falling over the rocks between Lewiston and Auburn, a landmark that is readily recognized as Lewiston-Auburn. The motto “Forever Learning” depicts the mindset of all Senior College members. Variations of the logo were submitted to the board in January and a final version, in shades of blue, yellow and gray, was accepted unanimously.
The logo has graced the cover of the Spring 2013 catalog released in February announcing the spring semester with 23 courses being offered from March 25 through May 17. L/A Senior College is the 11th senior college to have its own logo out of the 17 senior colleges within Maine.
Courses this semester cover a wide range of subjects including astrology, Newtonian physics, American folk art, French and Spanish languages, computer basics, anthropology, horticulture, Maine units in the Civil War, religion in America, the legacy of Abraham Lincoln, antique Maine Cape Cod architecture, best film comedies, Dave Barry humor, memoir writing, American film masterpieces, teaching in China, and special destinations.
Open to all persons age 50 and older and their spouses, the courses will be presented by peers, with no entrance requirements, grades or tests. Annual membership is $25, valid from Sept. 1, 2012, through Aug. 31, 2013. Membership provides access to the computer lab and library and to Senior College courses at other USM campuses.
The course fees, which include the cost of most books and materials, are $25 each for the first two courses and then $10 for each additional course. All classes are held during the day at L-A College, 51 Westminster St., unless specifically noted in the catalog.
Registration closes March 15 and must be mailed in. For more information, call 753-6610 and leave a name and number for call back or visit usm.maine.edu/seniorcollege.
