AUBURN — They’re getting air and they’re getting exposure.
Three snowboarders who call Lost Valley their home mountain are in the third leg of a four-part New England competition called the 2013 Video Games that mixes two distinctly different skill sets: on the slopes and behind the camera.
“It’s not just the riding and it’s not just the filming; it’s a mash of both of them,” said Dylan DeConzo, 18, of Auburn.
Zac Anderson, 23, of Leeds, and Logan Laliberte, 20, of Auburn, round out LV Team Supreme. They have been snowboarding for six to 10 years.
“It’s a competition; we love competing,” DeConzo said.
The first two stops of the 2013 Video Games were in Massachusetts and New Hampshire. The third was in Sunday River on March 2, when teams were given a day to film a list of 10 items — moves like an ollie, four tricks on the Rocking Chair jump, a quick “Harlem Shake” — and five days to edit.
They’re up against five other teams with names like Big Buck Hunter and The Loch Ness Monsters. BBH had a slim lead over the local team Thursday morning, 1,181 votes to 1,162.
Online voting for the third round of the Viewers Choice Awards ends Friday.
On Sunday, they do it all over again, filming and snowboarding at Okemo in Vermont. That video will go up for the fourth round of voting about a week later. The grand prize in the competition is a Puerto Rico surfing vacation.
DeConzo said his favorite part of the Sunday River shoot was the backcountry riding, using downed trees in place of rails. The 2-minute video opens with the “Harlem Shake,” a scene filmed separately at Lost Valley (the only shot of the 10 allowed outside that one day of filming).
“People are starting to see us shred and starting to see who we are,” DeConzo said. “We want people to know coming from a small mountain, you can get somewhere.”
