LIVERMORE FALLS — Erin Gats, daughter of Bill and Kelli Gats of Livermore, a senior at Spruce Mountain High School’s South Campus, has been selected to receive the 2013 Principal’s Award, Principal Steve Leunig has announced.

This award, sponsored by the Maine Principals’ Association, is given in recognition of a high school senior’s academic achievement and citizenship. Leunig noted that Erin’s school achievements are impressive in terms of both quantity and quality, and she has distinguished herself in all applicable evaluative categories. Erin has consistently performed at a high level throughout high school, and she is ranked 10th in the Class of 2013.

In addition to being a member of the Academic Top Ten, Erin is also an accomplished and honored multi-sport athlete, including four years as a member of the field hockey and track teams and two years as a member of the ski team. During her high school career she has served as a captain in all three sports and she has received awards for her athletic accomplishments, including being selected as a member of this year’s All-State Field Hockey Team and being selected this year’s Mountain Valley Conference “Player of the Year” in field hockey.

Erin has also been very involved in school and leadership activities, including serving on the Civil Rights Team, Prom Committee and the RSU 73 Building Disposition Committee. She has been a three-year member of Student Senate and is this year’s president, and she has served as a class officer in prior years.

Erin is a two-year member of National Honor Society and this year she assisted the Main Office as an office aide. Erin continues to work part-time and she also has volunteered her time for community service activities, including Youth Ministry and the Tri-Town Food Bank.

After graduation from Spruce Mountain High School, Erin plans to attend Norwich University in the Corps of Cadets program, majoring in communications, and she will participate in Air Force ROTC.

Erin and Leunig will attend an Honors Luncheon along with other award winners and their principals in Bangor on Saturday, April 6. The luncheon recognizes these outstanding students with the presentation of an individual plaque and the awarding of five $1,000 scholarships in the names of Horace O. McGowan and Richard W. Tyler, who were former Maine principals and executive directors of the association.

The Principal’s Award is presented in more than 100 Maine public and private high schools by member principals of the MPA, the professional association which represents Maine’s school administrators.
