CARTHAGE — Firefighters from Carthage, Weld and Dixfield rolled out just after midnight Saturday to a structure fire on River Road.
They arrived at Mary Evans’ home at 188 River Road to find a 12- by 16-foot shed/lean-to fully engulfed in flames, Carthage fire Capt. Larry Blodgett said early Saturday evening.
Blodgett said he arrived home from work at 12:30 a.m. and went to the scene to help. He said they couldn’t save the shed so they worked to protect Evans’ old farmhouse, which was about 50 feet away.
Weld firefighters set up a water station at a hydrant half a mile away and tankers shuttled water to the scene on the narrow road.
Blodgett credited the mutual aid with preventing the fire from spreading to the house.
“Dixfield really made the difference,” he said. “They did a wonderful job and it wasn’t even their town or county.”
Blodgett said he didn’t know whether the fire’s cause had been determined or it was still being investigated. Tools and woodworking equipment stored in the single-story building were destroyed.
Firefighters also were called out in Jay after a homeowner’s brush fire got away from him Saturday morning on Warren Hill off Claybrook Road, Jay fire Assistant Chief Mike Booker said. That fire burned about a quarter-acre of grass before it was extinguished.
