HARRISON — Thirteen sixth-grade students from Harrison Elementary School talked with older residents, did word puzzles and played bingo with them, and helped serve lunch at this month’s Senior Social and Luncheon at the fire station community room.

The Harrison Lions Club sponsored this month’s social. Second Vice District Gov. Steve Johnson and his wife, Lion Maureen Johnson, welcomed the seniors and spoke about the Lions’ contribution to local, state, national and international causes. Lions Club International is the largest service organization in the world, with 1.5 million members worldwide.

Lolita Chisholm of Harrison cooked up her specialty of chicken and vegetable stir-fry on rice and April Frank, bookkeeper at the Town Office, baked pineapple upside-down cake. Lisa Winslow and Kelly Howard, volunteers for this program, also helped.

This was the second group of sixth-graders from the school who have participated in learning about community involvement and service through the event. Teacher Bernadette Twitchell accompanied the them. One more group will be involved with the Senior Social and Luncheon in May, the final one of the school year.

The event is a program of the Harrison Parks and Recreation Department.
