NORWAY — The Mountain Poets Society will celebrate National Poetry Month with a reading in honor of Norway poet Ben Hull (1941-2012) on Thursday, April 25, at 7 p.m. at the Norway Memorial Library. Free commemorative bookmarks that combine a photo of Ben and one of his favorite poems will be available to all who attend.
Benjamin Franklin Hull III wrote wonderful poems about the people, cats, birds and places that he loved. Born in Gloucester, Mass., he was a computer programmer for 30 years in the Boston area. In 1973, he started building his log cabin on Ralph Richardson Road in Norway and became a full-time Maine resident in 1990.
Hull was an accomplished photographer, composed music, played piano by ear and wrote long letters about critters and politics to a wide circle of friends who appreciated his wise words and keen observations. In 2010, he published a collection of poetry and prose called “Boston to Maine: Poems & Tales from an Immigrant to Maine.” All profits from the book have been donated to the Western Foothills Land Trust.
The Mountain Poets Society, formerly the Bethel Poets Society, is an informal collection of poets and poetry-lovers who have met for more than 15 years. Currently, the group meets on the second Sunday of each month in the Fare Share Commons at 4 p.m. Meetings are open to everyone. Members read aloud original and admired poems for general discussion and appreciation.
MPS is famous for its annual event called Poets on the Porch at the Norway Arts Festival which celebrated its 10th year in 2012. For more information about the group, contact Lisa at 743-9808.
There will also be a glass-case display of some of Ben’s poems, postcards, letters and watercolors at the library throughout April.
You can hear the poets, including Ben Hull, reading at Poets on the Porch X at www.poetsontheporch.com.
