1958 – 2013

 

EUSTIS — Richard W. Small Jr., 55, of Eustis, passed away on Wednesday, April 10, at his home. 

He was born Oct. 3, 1958, in Lewiston, a son of the late Richard W. Sr. and Mildred (Adamsky) Small.

He attended local schools, graduating from Edward Little High School in the Class of 1976. He then attended the University of Maine at Augusta, and was a graduate of the 39th Municipal/County Basic Police School in Waterville. Dick was hired on Dec. 26, 1979 by then-Chief Peter Mador. He joined the Auburn Police Department after working for two years as a sergeant for the Androscoggin County Sheriff’s Office, under Sheriff Lionel Cote. After spending the 1st three years as a patrol officer, he worked his way through the ranks, serving as corporal for five years and detective for seven years, including a special assignment as a Maine drug enforcement agent. He became acting sergeant over the APD’s Bureau of Criminal Investigations in 1994 and then became deputy chief in 1996. While serving as deputy chief, he attended the 194th Session at the FBI Law Enforcement Academy in Quantico,Va. Dick became chief of police in 1999, serving until his retirement in 2006.

On Aug. 9, 1997, he married Gina Godfrey in Auburn, where they worked and raised their young family. He was a member of the Kora Shrine, The Masons Tranquil Lodge, and was a very community-minded citizen who always made it a priority to help meet the needs of those who were less fortunate. He was a huge history buff who enjoyed hunting, fishing, watching movies, spending time at his camp in Eustis, but most of all, he cherished his time spent with his grandchildren.

Dick is survived by his wife, Gina Small, of Norway; his daughter, Christina Brimberry and husband, Jim, of Covington, Ga.; his stepson, Adam Ellis and wife, Jennifer, of Norway; five grandchildren, Mikayla, Gavin and Haley Ellis, Dakota and Dylan Brimberry; four sisters, Kathi Doyle and husband, Bryan, of Wales, Brenda Verrill of Minot, Lizz Pelletier and husband, Michael, of Litchfield, Michael Small and wife, Liz, of Minot, Trish LaValley and husband, Garner, of Auburn; his mother and father-in-law, Albert and Connie Godfrey, of Winthrop; his stepmother, Martha Small of Palm Bay, Fla.; sister-in-law, Jackie Douglas; brothers-in-law, Albert Jr., Larry and John Godfrey; a very special nephew, Matthew Douglas; and many other nieces and nephews.

Besides his parents; he was predeceased by a stepson, Troy Ellis.
