Great Falls Forum is April 18

LEWISTON — Laura A. Fortman, executive director of the Frances Perkins Center in Newcastle, will be the speaker at the April Great Falls Forum, which will take place from noon to 1 p.m. Thursday, April 18, in the Lewiston Public Library’s Callahan Hall.

Fortman will enlighten attendees on the life and amazing career of Frances Perkins, the first woman to serve in a U.S. presidential cabinet (as FDR’s Secretary of Labor) and one of the chief architects of Roosevelt’s “New Deal.”

All Forum programs are free and open to the public. Attendees are encouraged to bring a brown bag lunch or to take advantage of the Forum’s partnership with Guthries Cafe and order from their menu in advance of the presentation. Bottled water, coffee and tea will be available at the library.

Prayer, vigil service for Boston

TURNER — In the wake of the Boston bombings, the North Turner Union Presbyterian Church will hold a prayer and candlelight vigil service from 6 to 6:30 p.m. Thursday, April 18, at 58 Howes Corner Road, North Turner.

“As people are feeling overwhelmed and helpless in the days after the Boston bombings, this church provides a place for people to come together to share a time of sadness, comfort and prayer,” Rev. Lissa Bradford said. “As an important part of this community we feel a responsibility to offer this time of prayer for the hundreds of people impacted by Monday’s bombings. The ripple effect is huge. When folks are feeling helpless that is something we can do: pray.”

Kathy Haley, Friends, supper

AUBURN — On Friday, April 19, at 7 p.m. Danville Union Church, 1065 Old Danville Road, will present a musical evening with well-known musician, Kathy Haley and Friends. There will be a freewill offering taken.

The program will be preceded by a potluck supper at 6 p.m. Bring a casserole, salad or dessert. Everyone is welcome to attend.

4-H Fun Day set for April 19

LISBON FALLS — Teen leaders of the Androscoggin-Sagadahoc Counties 4-H Clubs will hold the first 4-H Fun Day from 12:30 to 3:30 p.m. Friday, April 19, at the MTM Community Center, 19 School St.

The free event is open to 4-H members and youths ages 5-18 who are interested in 4-H.

Activities will include tree identification, cooking, face painting, rock painting and general survival skills. Preregistration is required, as space is limited.

Community Recycle Day

AUBURN — A Community Recycle Day will take place from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, April 20, at 40 Stanley St.

Several local organizations are joining forces to offer the community a convenient and free way to recycle items such as tires, televisions, printers, cell phones, eye glasses, batteries, etc. Community Credit Union, eWaste Recycling Solutions, Security Shredding and Stratham Tire are partnering again to provide this service to the community.

Pomona Grange Degree Day

AUBURN — Androscoggin Pomona Grange will host a Degree Day at 4 p.m. Sunday, April 21, at Danville Junction Grange.

All four degrees will be conferred at that time. There will be a light luncheon served for a small fee between the second and third degrees.

Any grange that has candidates may bring them to take their degrees. All grangers are welcome to attend.

Defense of civil liberties

BRUNSWICK — Resisting the Assault on Our Bill of Rights will take place at 11 a.m. Sunday, April 21, in the Morrell Room at Curtis Memorial Library.

Participating in the program will be Debra Sweet of The World Can’t Wait and Michael Figura of the Bill of Rights Defense Committee.

Civil liberties are being threatened by the National Defense Authorization Act and the Patriot Act which give the government the right to arrest its citizens, imprison them indefinitely without charge, counsel or trial and even assassinate them.

Active, Retired Employees meet

LEWISTON — Lewiston Chapter 1804 of the National Active and Retired Employees Association will meet at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, April 23, at the Ramada Inn.

Gluten-Free bread making

LEWISTON —  Join the Living Gluten-Free Support Group and Suzanne Dunham for a night of gluten-free bread making at 6 p.m. Tuesday, April 23, at the St. Mary’s Nutrition Center, 208 Bates St.

Dunham will also review how to make and prepare Paleo Bread, a type of bread inspired by the Paleolithic diet made up of whole, unprocessed ingredients such as almond flour, coconut flour, egg whites, apple and cider vinegar. Participants will receive recipes, helpful handouts and samples.

Dunham has given Living Gluten-Free seminars and cooking classes since 2005 in various venues in Maine. She developed her most recent presentation to raise awareness about cross contamination. The presentation also provides a summary of gluten intolerance and celiac disease and the latest news on living gluten-free.

Dunham is an herbalist who focuses on digestion. She operates a dedicated gluten-free commercial kitchen from a family farm in Greenwood. She provides baked goods and mixes to area natural food stores. She and her husband, Brian, are also beekeepers and produce maple syrup.
