Service, ‘Stories on the Steps’

LEWISTON — Calvary United Methodist Church invites everyone to the service Sunday, April 28, led by pulpit guest Bonnie Marden.

Her topic for both the 9 a.m. Bible study and 10:30 a.m. service will be personal stewardship.

Beginning May 4 a new free activity, “Stories on the Steps,” will be added to the church’s weekly calendar. Storyteller Pat Gardiner will offer a selection of tales for both children and adults from noon to 1 p.m. weather permitting.

Tales from around the world, fables and tall tales, Bible stories and more will be presented outdoors on the front steps of the church, 59 Sabattus St.

AUBURN — The children of the United Methodist Church of Auburn will start their final theme of the regular Sunday School year May 5.

The Sunday School program encompasses a wide range of ages (age 2 to 12th grade), and will be learning more about the Bible, including how it was passed down, written and translated into many languages.

A mission project for May and June will support Wycliffe Bible Translators, to help provide access to the Bible all around the world. About 209 million people lack Scripture in their language. The goal is to raise $100, and children will have an opportunity to contribute during their Sunday School classes.

In 2008, Caroline Coffin, Director of Christian Education, introduced a new Sunday School curriculum to the United Methodist Church of Auburn. In this method, one Bible story or theme is the focus of four weeks. The children meet for Children’s Choir at 9:45 a.m., and then “rotate” to a different “workshop” every week to discover the story. They experience workshops in science, art, music, storytelling/drama, cooking, games and Godly Play in the course of these four weeks.

New registrations are always welcome. For more information, contact Kary Coffin, Director of Christian Education at the United Methodist Church of Auburn, at dce@auburnmethodist.org or call 782-3972.

Vibrational healing workshop

This 2.5-hour experiential workshop offers voice-on practical experience in healing with sound vibrations. The Healing Circle is a continuation of the Healing with Musical Mediumship workshop Felt offered in the fall.

Music is a vibrational mechanism that enables Spirit to communicate with us. Music is also a powerful force in healing. Participants will be guided in a whole body moving meditation to prepare their instrument — the brain and central nervous system — for attunement to the healing needs of other participants. Specific healing chants will be shared for the major chakras.

Bring a recording device; your preferred musical instrument, such as a rattle, a flute or a drum; and any object you may already use, such as a crystal, to enhance spiritual vibrations when you work with your Spirit Healing Guides. Bring some padding to support your body comfortably while lying on the floor, such as a pad, blanket, pillows or a chaise lounge which lies flat; and water to drink.

Suggested donation is $25. For more information call 207-515-1016.

Sermon on the common good

NORWAY — The Rev. Anne Stanley will give a service titled “The Common Good — What’s In It for Me?” at 11 a.m. Sunday, May 5, at First Unitarian Universalist Church of Norway, 479 Main St.

Stanley is an Episcopal priest, recently retired as rector of Christ Episcopal Church in Norway, where she served for nearly 14 years.

She will be answering the questions of how do we reconcile our individual rights with the rights of everyone else, of the community? Can we do that? Should we even bother? Is the notion of the “common good” just a modern, wishy-washy liberal idea?

Childcare is provided and social hour follows the service.
